What if it rains?

Summer in South Africa is the most popular time of the year for weddings. It's also for most parts of the country, the rainy season. After a dry winter, the rain usually starts in October and continues until March in Limpopo, North West, Gauteng, Kwa-Zulu Natal and the Free State. You might have a golden sunset, or you might have grey skies on your wedding day. This leads to one of our most commonly asked questions.

"What if it rains on my wedding day?"

The short answer

So what?

Rain on your wedding day is considered a sign of luck or blessing! As a German friend once told me- you are not made of sugar.

The long answer

However, as that same friend also said "there is not bad weather, only bad clothing". And a wedding dress and suit are perhaps not the best clothing for a rainy day! So, here are some of the things we actually do as a Gauteng wedding photographer and videographer to still capture beautiful moments even in inclement weather.

1.Forewarned is forearmed

We always check the weather forecast from around a week before the wedding. If there is rain forecast, and we know about it, we can be better prepared. We'll pack coverings for our cameras and gear, spare shoes, and umbrellas. We encourage our couples to also consider back up shoes, a makeup touchup kit, umbrellas and warm clothing as well.

2.Flexibility is key

We keep a close eye on the weather on wedding days. If a typical Highveld thunder storm is building, we may change the order of events. Often, this means taking couple photos before the rain, and then doing family and bridal party indoors.

3.We can take photos indoors

While many South African brides and grooms choose their wedding venues because of the location/view/nature, indoor photos are always an option, and can be just as beautiful. Photos in the lovely reception hall, bridal suite or even just a verandah are always an option.

Pro tip: keep these possibilities in mind when choosing your venue!

4.We can get a little wet

Most of the time, if the rain isn't too hard and there's no lightning, we will advise our couples to continue as planned. A little moisture never hurt anyone, and as long as everyone is happy, the rain can be a vibe!

5.Last resort

In the event of truly unpleasant weather, there is the option to reschedule your photos. Put on your wedding outfits and organise a photoshoot on a day where the sun is shining. While this is a pretty admin-heavy and possibly costly option, it is an option, and one we will happily assist with. \

If it rains on your wedding day

You don't need to worry. Your day will still be beautiful and memorable! As professionals, your photographer and videographer should be perfectly capable of planning around the weather and still getting the perfect photos!

If you're looking for a South African wedding photographer and videographer who are used to the weather here and aren't scared to get a little wet, we'd love to hear from you!
