Engagement Shoot at Church Square Pretoria: Love, Laughter, and Timeless Elegance
Hey friends! I’m so excited to share this beautiful engagement shoot at Church Square Pretoria. With the beautiful old European architecture surrounding us, the location really is beautiful and seeped in history. Church Square remains a popular choice for photo shoots, despite becoming somewhat rundown and unsafe in recent years.
Let’s dive into the details of this gorgeous shoot and talk about the couple, the location, and all the special moments we captured together.
Setting the Scene: Church Square & the University of Pretoria Hatfield Campus
First off, Church Square is one of Pretoria’s most iconic landmarks, with its grand old architecture and rich history, featuring the Palace of Justice and statue of former South African president, Paul Kruger. It’s the kind of place that makes you feel like you’ve stepped back in time, with its stately buildings, cobblestone pathways, and towering statues. It was the perfect location for this Pretoria engagement session, offering a sophisticated and classy atmosphere. Unfortunately, despite going to Church Square late on Sunday afternoon in hopes it would be quiet, the Square was still fairly busy and the litter mess put a bit of a damper on our enthusiasm. After a man who appeared to be under the influence of something continued to follow us around, shouting, us and our couple started to feel uncomfortable and we were struggling to get the shots we planned. We made the decision after around 20 minutes to leave the square. We still managed to get some really beautiful shots though!
After a bit of thought, we remembered the nearby University of Pretoria campus, which features similar architecture. We headed over there and continued with our shoot. As the University is access controlled (you need at arrange a permit if you are not a student there), the campus was safe and quiet and we could continue our shoot without any more interruptions, and still keep the overall look!
The Couple: So Much Love, So Much Fun!
Now, let me tell you a bit about our couple! We've known Krayno and Melissa for a few years, and they're always fun. They recently got engaged while overseas in Ireland and we've been so excited for their engagement session, as well as their wedding. They were so natural in front of the camera, which always makes our job easier! We loved how comfortable they were with each other, and how unbothered by small things they were. That kind of connection is what makes Pretoria wedding photography so special for us: capturing those little moments that show a couple’s true personality and love for one another.
We started the shoot by exploring Church Square, taking in the stunning surroundings. The lovely architecture created the perfect backdrop for this couple’s elegance, and it felt like we were capturing moments straight out of a romance movie. Whether they were walking hand in hand through the streets or sharing a quiet moment by the lovely doors, every shot was filled with a sense of timelessness.
What we loved most about this couple was how at ease they were with each other. There was no pressure to pose perfectly, rather simple, genuine interactions that told their love story beautifully. It was clear they were having fun, which made for some of the most beautiful, romantic photos.
Unique Features of the Day: European Charm & Sophistication
One of the most magical parts of this engagement shoot was the stunning old European architecture around Church Square. The tall, intricate buildings and historical details gave the session an air of sophistication and elegance. With the overcast skies above, the atmosphere felt soft and dreamy, almost as if time had slowed down just for them.
As we wandered around the square, I was reminded of how much Pretoria wedding photographers love working with this kind of backdrop. The combination of history, architecture, and natural beauty creates a setting that’s perfect for capturing those timeless moments that will last a lifetime. We took advantage of the steps, open spaces and very tame pigeons to create a story for their shoot.
Once we headed to the University, we made use of the beautiful Old Arts building, and other quiet corners and alcoves in the stunning 100 year-old campus.
I’m so excited for you to see the images from this engagement shoot at Church Square and the University of Pretoria. Every shot is a beautiful reflection of this couple’s love and the timeless elegance of the location. Whether you’re planning a Pretoria wedding or looking for the perfect place for your own Pretoria photo shoot with a similar look, the University campus is a fantastic choice.
I hope you enjoy these photos as much as I enjoyed capturing them! If you’re planning your own engagement session or wedding and want to chat about how we can create magic together, feel free to reach out. I’d love to hear from you!
