A Windy, Wild & Beautiful Engagement Shoot at Betty’s Bay
The coastline of Betty's Bay is breathtaking. Untamed, dramatic and romantic. The minute we arrived for the shoot, we instantly knew it would be one of our favourite locations as a South African wedding photographer and videographer team.
When we met up with these two for their engagement shoot, Betty’s Bay gave us everything: golden light, crashing waves, dramatic skies, and just enough wind to make things feel a little cinematic (and a little chaotic in the best way).
Why Betty’s Bay is Perfect for Engagement Photos
If you’re dreaming of an engagement shoot that feels natural and a little adventurous, Betty’s Bay is hard to beat. Tucked along the scenic coastal drive between Cape Town and Hermanus, it offers a mix of rocky shorelines, soft sandy patches, and fynbos-covered dunes.
For couples planning a wedding in the Western Cape, it’s also a beautiful way to incorporate the landscape into your story before the big day. As a South African wedding videographer, we love how the movement of the ocean and wind adds so much life to video.

A Session That Felt Like Them
What we loved most about this shoot wasn’t just the setting, it was how effortlessly these two connected with each other. No stiff posing, just laughter, and the kind of comfort that comes from really knowing your person. That’s always our goal as a South African wedding photographer and videographer team: to create space for you to be yourselves. We’ll guide you when you need it, but we’re mostly there to observe, document, and gently direct when the light (or the wind!) calls for it.
Embracing the Wind (and Trusting the Process)
Let’s be honest, Betty’s Bay can be windy. Like, really windy. But instead of fighting it, we lean into it. Windswept hair, flowing dresses, jackets wrapped tight and it all adds texture and authenticity to your photos and films. Truthfully, we got lucky with this shoot! the clouds parted and the wind calmed down a little.
And the light? Absolutely worth it. As the sun started to dip, everything softened into that dreamy golden glow the Western Cape is known for. It’s the kind of light that makes you understand why so many couples choose this part of the country for their weddings, and why being a South African wedding photographer never gets old.
Planning Your Own Engagement Shoot
If you’re considering an engagement session in the Western Cape, here are a few quick tips:
Dress comfortably, but intentionally – neutrals and soft tones work beautifully with the natural surroundings
Be prepared for the weather – layers are your friend, especially along the coast
Trust your photographer and videographer – we’ll help you find the best light and guide you naturally
Make it an experience – grab a coffee after, explore the coastline, and turn it into a date
Whether you’re planning a local wedding or travelling for a destination celebration, an engagement shoot is such a meaningful way to slow down and celebrate this season. We feel so lucky to capture love stories in places like Betty’s Bay.
