Golden-Hour Engagement Shoot at Pretoria Botanical Garden | Stephen & Andria


Pretoria National Botanical Garden always feels a little magical, and the perfect place for an engagement shoot. Maybe it’s the way the late afternoon light filters through the trees, or how every little pathway somehow feels private and peaceful even in the middle of the city. Whatever it is, Stephen and Andria’s session reminded us exactly why we love photographing couples here so much.


As a Pretoria wedding photographer and videographer team, we’ve photographed in many beautiful locations over the years, but the Botanical Gardens remain one of our favourite spots for engagement sessions. It has this incredible mix of natural scenery and quiet little corners that make every shoot feel unique. And for couples who want photos that feel relaxed and genuinely like them, it’s hard to beat.

From the moment Stephen and Andria arrived, it honestly just felt like spending time with old friends. They were easygoing, and completely comfortable laughing together, which always makes for the best photos. These two are getting married later this year (and we’ll be photographing their wedding too, which we’re incredibly excited about), so this shoot also felt like the beginning of their wedding story rather than just a standalone session.


One of the things we always tell couples before an engagement shoot at Pretoria National Botanical Garden is that you really don’t need to “perform” for the camera. The goal isn’t stiff posing or perfectly curated moments. It’s simply creating space for you to spend time together while we document the connection naturally as it unfolds. Stephen and Andria embraced that approach completely.


We wandered through some of the garden’s quieter pathways first, easing into the session slowly. The Botanical Gardens are especially beautiful during late summer, and the golden evening light softens the landscape in the most flattering way. There’s also so much variety within the venue itself, which is one of the reasons it’s such a popular location for Pretoria engagement photography. Within a short walk, you can move from dense greenery to dramatic rocky backdrops to wide open grass fields that glow at sunset.


Watching Stephen and Andria together was effortless in the best possible way.


Those are always our favourite moments as a Pretoria engagement photographer team: the in-between moments that aren’t overly posed or planned. The way Stephen looked at Andria when she laughed. The quiet moments between conversations. The way they instinctively reached for each other’s hands while walking. Those little interactions tell the real story.


As sunset approached, we made our way toward some of the more open areas of the gardens to catch the last light of the evening. Golden hour at Pretoria National Botanical Garden never disappoints. The warm tones and grassy spaces create such a romantic atmosphere, especially for couples planning Pretoria weddings who want natural imagery.


One thing we loved about this session was how intentional Stephen and Andria were about simply enjoying the experience together. Engagement shoots can sometimes feel intimidating if you’ve never been professionally photographed before, but sessions like this are actually such a great way to get comfortable before the wedding day. By the end of the shoot, it felt less like “taking photos” and more like spending an evening together exploring one of the prettiest spots in Pretoria.


And that’s exactly what we want every couple to feel when working with us.

We want your photos to feel like memories, not productions. We want your experience to feel relaxed and genuine. And we want you to walk away from your engagement session even more excited for your wedding day than before.
