This wedding was one of those days that reminded everyone that sometimes the best wedding plans are simply trusting the day to unfold.

A Week of Rain... and Perfect Timing

The week leading up to the wedding brought day after day of rain. Naturally, everyone kept checking the forecast, wondering what the wedding day would bring. But while everyone else worried, Ilse was calm.

Her attitude was simple:

"Whatever happens, happens."*

And... almost as if the weather had been waiting just for them, the clouds cleared and the sun came out on their wedding morning!

The ground was still muddy, but instead of letting it become a problem, Ilse simply pulled on her Freedom of Movement veldskoene beneath her wedding dress and carried on smiling.

Getting Ready at Home

One of our favourite parts of the day was how personal everything felt. The morning preparations happened in the guest house on the farm, meaning nobody had to rush between venues or stick to tight schedules. Family wandered between rooms, laughter carried through the house, and there was such a wonderful sense of familiarity. This wasn't just another wedding venue. The bride's family actually owns Kasteelkop Guest Farm, making the day even more meaningful. In fact, both of her sisters were married here too, making this another beautiful chapter in a place already filled with family memories. Those kinds of stories are impossible to manufacture and they're part of what makes Free State Wedding Photography so rewarding.

A First Touch Filled with Emotion

Instead of seeing each other before the ceremony, the couple chose to have a first touch outside the guest house.They stood on opposite sides of the wall, held hands and shared a quiet prayer together.Just the two of them taking a few peaceful moments before the excitement of the day began. It's amazing how emotional these quiet moments become. Sometimes they're even more powerful than a traditional first look because you can hear every word, every laugh and every deep breath without the distraction of everything happening around you.

A Forest Wedding Ceremony

One of the highlights of the day was undoubtedly the Forest Wedding Ceremony. Hidden beneath the trees, surrounded by towering trunks and filtered sunlight, the ceremony space felt wonderfully intimate. The recent rain had left the forest looking lush and alive, perfectly set against the autumn colours. Ilse and Hein's vows were heartfelt and beautifully written, leaving more than a few guests reaching for tissues. Moments like these are why documentary-style photography matters so much. They're impossible to recreate later, and they're often the memories couples treasure most.

Exploring the Farm

After the ceremony, we wandered around the farm for portraits. One of our favourite locations was the hill overlooking the property, complete with a beautifully weathered vintage truck that fit the relaxed farm atmosphere perfectly. Although we did have to hurry to catch the last rays of the sun on top of the hill, it was worth every second

Rather than posing couples for hours, we gently guide when needed while giving plenty of space for natural interaction. It keeps everything feeling relaxed, comfortable and genuinely like you.

A Relaxed Farm Wedding Reception

The reception continued the same effortless atmosphere. Held inside the farm's rustic dining hall, the space embraced its natural character rather than trying to hide it. Draping and soft lighting allowed the venue itself to shine. One detail we absolutely loved was the lack of formal seating arrangements.

Guests simply found their places naturally, chatted with whoever they pleased and moved around throughout the evening. It created such a welcoming atmosphere where everyone genuinely felt part of the celebration.

Sometimes less really is more.

This wedding proved that beautiful spaces don't need excessive decoration, they simply need people enjoying themselves.
